Academic Center for Excellence (ACE)

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), located in the upper level of the RichLyn Library, provides academic services designed to help HU students achieve academic success. In individual or small group settings, these free supports range from peer tutoring in a variety of courses to academic counseling in areas such as time management, test anxiety, test preparation, and learning styles.

The Writing Center is open several times each week to help students improve their writing skills. Students may drop in to request assistance in developing and organizing a paper, expressing their ideas clearly, editing compositions, etc. There is no fee for these services.

CLEP and DSST exams - Students may earn HU course credit by passing CLEP and DSST examinations. Exams are scheduled based on availability in ACE. Registration information is available online and in the ACE.

Services for students with disabilities - Students with learning, orthopedic, neurological, psychiatric, sensory, or other conditions that substantially limit one or more major life activities may require accommodations to access the HU campus. In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA Amendments Act as amended, the University will make reasonable accommodations for students. The director of the ACE coordinates accommodations for students who have documented disabilities.

 

ABLE - The ABLE (Achieving Balance in Life through Education) Program is a four-year program for students with intellectual disabilities from the ages 18-24. It provides students to be part of a university campus, attend/audit classes, and receive support from peer mentors. The program not only supports the students with disabilities but provides an equally important opportunity for all typical students, faculty, and staff to more fully understand the potential of individuals with disabilities.

Bookstore

The HU Bookstore is located on the second floor of the HUB. Textbooks (new and used), reference books, bargain trade books, art supplies, school supplies, snacks, health & beauty supplies, retail gift cards, and school spirit apparel & gifts may be obtained in the HU Bookstore. VISA, Discover, MasterCard, American Express, personal checks, and cash will be accepted. Students may use their Bookstore Charge accounts to purchase anything that is sold in the store leading up to and through two weeks after the start of each semester. Bookstore hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-5:00 PM during the academic year.

Campus Police

Huntington University values the safety and security of our campus community. Because of this, we have active Huntington area, Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) commissioned, police officers who patrol our campus. They respond to emergencies, escort students to their residence halls, secure campus buildings, and provide a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff. As with all recognized state and local safety and emergency agencies, we expect that members of our community will comply with all directions given by the HU Campus Police. Failing to cooperate with the HU Campus Police (including running from Campus Police) will result in disciplinary action and a fine.

 

Career Development

The Career Development Office, located in the Huntington Union Building (HUB), assists students and alumni in making and implementing career decisions. Assistance is offered to students through career counseling and planning, opportunities for career exploration, assistance with job search skills, and accessing graduate school and career-related information. Assessment and personality instruments that may be used include the following: Myers-Briggs Type Inventory, Self-Directed Search, or Career Direct, Living by Design. These instruments are free of charge and are used along with a series of career counseling appointments.

 

FOCUS 2 is a career-assisted career and educational planning system for use by students and perspective students. The program provides valid and reliable assessments including Work Interests- Holland Code, Personality, Values, Skills, Leisure Interests and Career Planning Readiness.

 

Specific services (when on demand) include:

Job Search Techniques class is offered during fall semester for juniors and seniors.

Career Exploration class is offered during spring semester for freshmen and sophomores.

 

Attention: Undecided Students! Any student who is undecided as to a major and/or career should seek assistance from the Office of Career Development.

 

Career counseling (a one-on-one opportunity to discuss career/major options) is a free service for students. A variety of assessments are used in career counseling to measure student’s interests, values, personality styles, skills, etc. as it relates to careers and majors. Counseling

Personal counseling is available to students at no cost and is confidential. Assistance is available for various concerns including emotional, academic, social, spiritual, relationships, and family. To request an appointment, students may complete this Request For Counseling application or they may directly contact the Director of Counseling Services, Martha Smith, at (260)359-4040. 

 

Dining Services

Sodexo Dining Services operates the dining services at Huntington University; they are responsible for the nutritional care of resident students and others who use the dining facilities. All resident students are required to be on a meal plan. Detailed information regarding the meal plans that HU offers, current pricing, etc. can be found on the portal at Meal Plan Information.  Sodexo offers additional information at https://www.huntington.edu/dining/meal-plans.

The Habecker Dining Commons (DC) is open Monday - Friday and serves meals during the following times: Breakfast 7am - 10:30am, Lunch 11am - 2pm, Dinner 5pm - 7pm.

The Forester Grille and Wrapped (both located on the second floor of the HUB) are open Monday - Friday and serve meals during the following times: Lunch 11am - 2pm, Dinner 7pm - 10:30pm.  On Sundays, dinner is served from 7pm - 10:30pm.

Forester Blend (Starbucks) (located on the first floor of the HUB) is open Monday - Thursday from 7am - 5pm and on Fridays from 7am - 3pm.

 

Friesen Center for Service and Experiential Learning

The Friesen Center assists students with all real-world work experiences through internships, job shadows, and practicum. An internship, practicum, or job shadow gives students experiences that are important in helping them to clarify their career goals and enhance their ability to secure future employment. Experiences may be paid or unpaid and are usually taken for academic credit.  

Additional services include:

  • Career development workshops called "Lunch and Learn" 

  • Fall Career Fair

Information Technology (I.T.) Services

IT Services Office

The IT Services Office is located on the first floor of the Dowden Science Hall building at the Indiana location. We are eager to help with any technology related concern or issue for students, employees, and guests. The Help Desk can be reached by calling (260) 359-4357 or by email at helpdesk@huntington.edu.

Computer Spaces

There are three computer spaces available to all students at our Indiana location: the main level of the Richlyn Library, and the lobby on the second floor of Loew-Brenn Hall. These spaces are available during the normal operating hours for their respective building. Also, there is a computer available for use in the 24-Hour Study Lounge located in Richlyn Library. Other computers spaces are made available to our Digital Media Arts students with specialized software that is applicable to their program of study.

Network/Internet Access

Students can connect their desktop, laptop, phone, or tablet to Huntington University’s wireless network by connecting to HU_Secure and logging in with their HU credentials. Other devices such as game consoles, TVs, etc. can be connected to Huntington University’s wireless network by connecting to HU_Devices. The device will need to be enrolled by submitting the MAC address to the web interface at devices.huntington.edu.

Security Software

Huntington University requires all students to have security software installed on their computer(s). Students have free access to Sophos that can be downloaded through a link sent from the Help Desk. Students can request a link by sending a message to helpdesk@huntington.edu.

Learning Management System - Moodle

Moodle is Huntington University’s Learning Management System (LMS). Faculty share the syllabus, course assignments, course content, and course grades through this platform. Collaboration among students and faculty is also possible through Moodle. To access their Moodle courses, students can log in to moodle.huntington.edu.

Microsoft 365/Microsoft Office

Students at Huntington University have access to Microsoft 365/Microsoft Office. To download, students can visit portal.office.com, log in with their HU email address and HU password, and then click “Install apps”. These applications are available for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS.

Microsoft OneDrive is included in this download, which can be used to back up any files and save them to the Cloud. Five terabytes of storage space are provided to all students.

Microsoft Teams is also included, which is a convenient way to collaborate with other students and faculty along with simplifying file sharing and group work.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Students can purchase Adobe Creative Cloud (which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Acrobat, and more) at a discounted rate. The All Apps plan is available for only $60 per semester and can be purchased through an online form.

Acceptable Use Policy

In general, the “Community Life Agreement” should provide sufficient guidance for acceptable computer usage: “Mature actions consistent with proper Christian behavior are expected of all students. Disciplinary action will result when student conduct is such that the University community is adversely affected” (see Appendix A of the Student Handbook).

Therefore, “proper Christian behavior” with respect to computer usage at Huntington University does not include any act that is disrespectful, humiliating, dehumanizing, threatening, harassing, or hazardous of other individuals or oneself; the use of improper gestures or improper language (i.e., profanity, racial or sexual slurs, sexual harassment); the abuse, defacing, mutilation, dismantling, tampering, borrowing, renting, leasing, or stealing any hardware, cables, or software property of Huntington University; and the illegal copying or sharing of copyrighted media files or data (commonly called “file sharing”). Any “hacking” or “cracking” (trying to access any unauthorized areas), illegal access, password or account sharing, or tampering with computer system files is strictly prohibited. Any of these actions may result is disciplinary action by Huntington University.

In keeping with these standards, we ask that students act out positive Christian behavior by being courteous, loving one’s neighbor as oneself, acting out the love of Christ, and promoting safe and secure environments at Huntington University. “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Philippians 4:2-3.

 

Lost and Found

"Lost and Found" is located in the Office of Student Life in the HUB. Lost items may be redeemed during normal office hours. If students find an item that they believe may have been lost by another student, students may turn in the item to the Office of Student Life.

 

Merillat Physical Education and Recreation Complex (PLEX)

The PLEX contains a gymnasium, racquetball courts, a field house with three basketball courts and an indoor track, two state-of-the-art weight rooms, cardio room, and an aerobics/core fitness room. For more information on PLEX availability, please call 260-359-4288 or extension 4288.

 

Motor Vehicle Parking Decals

All motor vehicles on campus must be registered with the Office of Student Life and are subject to campus parking regulations. All students with a valid driver’s license are permitted to operate motor vehicles while observing the laws of the State of Indiana and regulations of Huntington University. All students who bring a motor vehicle on campus at any time must register that vehicle. Vehicle registration may be completed here. The fee for a decal is $25 per semester and is automatically billed to each student's account each semester. If you do not have a vehicle on campus, you may waive the decal fee here.  If you have purchased an HU vanity plate from the BMV, you may request to waive the parking decal fee by emailing studentlife@huntington.edu. Waivers should be submitted before the end of the first week of classes during each semester or the fee will not be removed. Students must submit waivers each semester.

Postal Services

The University Mailing Services is located in the maintenance building on Fruit Street. Hours of operation are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Mailing Services offers United Parcel Service (UPS), United States Postal Service and Fed Ex services for students and University personnel. All full-time students, both residents and commuters, are assigned a mailbox.

 

RichLyn Library

Regular semester hours for the library are:

Sunday 2:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Saturday 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 pm.

The library closes from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays for Chapel. Special hours will be posted in advance for vacations, holidays, summer term, and end of the semester extended evening hours. The after-hours study area gives students the opportunity for late-night individualized or group study and is accessible with a current student ID card.

Your student ID card is your library card. Books and periodicals are loaned for a specified period - most with one renewal. Reference books can be checked out overnight, one-half hour before closing and must be back in the library one-half hour after it opens the next day. We also have e-books, streaming video and audio, and CD and DVD collections.

 The library homepage -  https://www.huntington.edu/library  - provides access to the library’s online catalog and many databases which can be accessed from anywhere using your HU username and password. Laptops, digital audio recorders, SLR cameras, and camcorders are also available for loan. The library provides access to other state, regional, and national resources through interlibrary loan service.

 Reserve materials are designated as such for the purpose of maximum use for students from specific classes. Reserve materials may be checked out for a term specified by the professor. Some reserve materials may be taken out overnight at one-half hour before closing time - unless restricted by the professor. These materials are due the following day one-half hour after opening.

The library has printers, scanners, and photocopy machines available for student use, as well as a laminator and various supplies. You may also send faxes at the library.

Librarians are available to assist students with their research needs and questions by drop-in or by appointment, and via Zoom, email, or phone.

 

Student Employment

On-Campus Student Employment: An on-campus job provides an opportunity to earn extra money, meet people, develop transferrable job skills, learn time-management skills, gain experience, and get more involved on campus.
